| Hi John,
I'm not aware of any issues that have been traced to using an AMD processor vs. an Intel one. |

| We have had great results with an AMD system, specifically a dual AMD Opteron 246 workstation we built for EASE use. Simulation times with Aura and surface mapping are under half the time compared to our newer 3.4GHz PentiumD dual core machines, even with half the RAM (2GB in the Opteron machine, 4GB in the PentiumD).
We decided to go with AMD for our EASE workstation after running the same simulation on machines of various processor types, and found AMD chips to be consistently faster for AURA and raytracing.
Hope this helps,
Don |

| Good morning everyone,
this thread is of great interest to me as I will be changing to a new laptop in the coming weeks (I hope to have the new machine on my desk by the time I return from NAMM...). Our IT department has asked me what requirements I had for my new machine. I currently have a Compaq Evo N620c running XP Pro on a Pentium M at 1.4 GHz with only 512 MB RAM. EASE chokes on a regular basis on larger projects, I have to break down simulation into sections of rooms otherwise computation takes forever (sims done yesterday were around 15 minutes to compute and render).
So, the questions are;
1) is an AMD-powered laptop going to be much faster than Intel-powered one (like the workstations mister DeLong is using)?
2) how much RAM should I request?
3) any specific suggestion as to brand and model?
Thanks in advance for your input.
Best regards,
Marc from Montreal |
